Deutsche Messe AG - CeBIT NEXT Crowdsourcing and social media before they went mainstream. That was CeBIT NEXT.

In cooperation with IBM, a system was developed to enable people to communicate across continents and develop shared visions of the future.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other prominent names took part in the brainstorming process via short text messages and video chat.

Each participant’s contribution was graphically displayed as a water lily on a pond, creating a real-time visualization of the collected submissions kept on an IBM DB2 database. The pond and the water lilies would change constantly depending on the number of contributions and how they were evaluated.

Over several weeks, thousands of contributions were collected and then provided to the Club of Rome for further use.
